The long trip via London to Spain and the jet lag meant that we were very relieved to see our friend Kika, (Dr Carmaela Baeza) and be taken to her family home. What a privilege to have friends in so many parts of the world!… I often think that working with mothers and babies and the health professionals so committed to supporting them for birth and breastfeeding, that we meet the most wonderful family-orientated and special people in the world! Aren’t we lucky!
After a day of much-needed rest, we caught a really efficient train north into the Basque country to Vittoria (Gasteiz in local language), where Nils spoke to midwives and lactation consultants.
On the Sunday we had a special tour of the old cathedral of Vittoria that they have done a very professional renovation from the foundation upwards of this cathedral from the early 1100s. This is apparently part of the inspiration for Ken Follett’s novel “Pillars of the Earth”. We had a fascinating tour including the bell tour, and views over the rooftops of Vittoria before catching the train “home” to Madrid.
